Highlights
The Arizona Diamondbacks debuted in 1998 as one of five new MLB franchises of the 1990s. Also known as the D-backs, they have been part of the National League West since their inception and have won five division titles. Initially wearing purple and teal, they changed their look to red and black in 2007. Coached by Torey Lovullo, they play their home games at Chase Field (formerly Bank One Park) in the heart of Phoenix. The stadium is famous for its swimming pool, the first of its kind in an MLB facility, with a capacity of over 48,500.
The Diamondbacks made the playoffs for the first time in 1999, in only their second season, when they won 100 games in the regular season and reached the NL Division Series, losing to the New York Mets. They then won the World Series in 2001 against the New York Yankees, becoming the fastest expansion team in MLB history to win a title. They also made the playoffs in 2002, 2007, 2011 and 2017, but failed to advance beyond the NL Championship Series on those occasions.
In 2022, Torey Lovullo became the winningest coach in franchise history, surpassing Kirk Gibson, who led the team from 2010 to 2014.
Arizona has three former players in the National Baseball Hall of Fame: Roberto Alomar, Randy Johnson and Alan Trammell. Randy Johnson, nicknamed the Big Unit, was the team's undisputed leader, winning five Cy Young Awards and the 2001 World Series MVP during his time with the Diamondbacks from 1999 to 2004.
Johnson holds the franchise pitching record, while Luis Gonzalez, now retired, is the all-time leader in career home runs (224), hits (1,337) and games played (1,194), among other records broken.
